Onan Repair

So we have now traveled about 1100  miles in the GMC this year.  The last trip got pretty warm, so I ran my onan generator and the roof air while driving.  This has been the longest my generator has been run at one time.  and it was leaking oil pretty good after about an hour.  after researching out possible causes, I am going to replace the three most common places oil leaks on these things: the oil filter bracket gasket, the LOP sender, and the front seal.  The generator was really easy to work on, but I ran into a real problem getting the flywheel off so I could access the front seal.  turns out I just had the wrong tool. 

 

Here is the flywheel.  quick reading on the NET says it is a taper fit, and should pop off.  Some have used harmonic balance pullers.  Since I had one of those.  I gave it a try.

Two broken harmonic balancer pullers.  both I had left tensioned overnight.  used some heat.  and pounded the thing quite a bit.  I thought this flywheel was just not going to come off.

This is a "timing gear puller"  I bought at O'reilies auto parts for $14.00.  it is lifetime warantee.  It popped the flywheel off with very little effort.  once i had this guy mounted up.  I had the flywheel off in less then 30 seconds.  This is a puller that they have for rent.  so I can return it if I want and get my money back.  I think I am going to keep it though, I have some other things i think this puller will work well on.

Hopefully someone else can benefit here if they are having troubles getting there flywheel off.  I picked up my seals today, and will be installing and reassembling tonight.
